"You cannot protect the environment unless you empower people, you inform them, and you help them understand that these resources are their own, that they must protect them." - Wangari Maathai
Nothing speaks to the interconnectedness of humans more directly than the damaging effects of climate change, where an action taken by one person can have devasting impacts on a community thousands of miles away. An estimated 50% of Kenya’s coastline is in Lamu; the island is on the receiving end of tons of plastic litter swept in by currents from all over the world. There is an urgent need to protect Lamu and its oceans, and Pamoja is at the forefront of this response. Through collaborative ventures with local enterprises such as Bahari Moja and FlipFlopi, Pamoja is promoting women-led climate action initiatives across Lamu. Our goal is to increase knowledge, exposure, and support for climate change action to help communities benefit more from their natural resources and to provide incentives for them to protect those resources for the long term.
